Founded in 1983 as Watercraft, Inc., Atlantic Furniture started as a manufacturer of pine waterbed frames. Since then, the Springfield, Mass.-based company has expanded to Fontana, Calif. The company has moved away from the use of pine and now specializes in imported furniture made of the wood of rubber trees.
The Benefits of Eco-Friendly Rubberwood
Prized as an environmentally friendly wood, rubberwood makes use of trees that have been cut down at the end of their latex-producing life cycle. The trees are removed by hand and replaced with new seedlings. In the past, felled rubber trees were either burned on the spot or used as fuel for locomotive engines, brick firing, or latex curing. Atlantic's Unique Five-Step Finishing Process
Each product in the entire line is finished with a high-build, five-step finishing process. After a thorough sanding, a wipe-on sealer is applied, followed by a tinted sealer to even the grain and color of the wood. Additional sanding prepares the surface for the first base color coat, more sanding, and a second base color coat. After a final sanding, the finish coat is applied. This process produces a beautiful and durable finish that will last for years.

A funny aside: We opened the first box and there were 4 legs. The second box, 4 more legs. Took a few seconds to realize that one set was for a lower bed and one set for a higher bed! FUNNY!

This bed is pretty much what I wanted. The construction and attachment hardware seem solid (except for one screw that sheared off while installing the slats)and they provide two sets of legs (box springs and no box springs) so you can achieve the optimum height. The instructions were clear enough (along with a little common sense)and it went together quickly and with minimum effort. The lines are simple and clean and it is certainly an improvement over the steel frame the mattress used to rest on.
However, it is not a bed you want as an integral part of your decor. The wood is manufactured (that is spliced together, like pre-primed wood trim) and the splices are easily visible through the clear finish. The cherry finish I ordered is uneven with numerous bubbles and streaks (although perfectly acceptable from a distance). I imagine even the solid finishes carry enough imperfections to mitigate against the frame as a decorator item.
Only time will tell if the frame holds up, but for the moment I am perfectly satisfied.

I bought the King Size platform bed. It arrived on time and was straightforward and simple to assemble. The king size bed has center supports for the slats with 2 sets - one for each of the different leg heights. After a few months of use, the center supports started buckling and gave way. I changed the legs and replaced the center supports with teh second set, which once again, after a few months of use buckled. (we're not even close to being overweight.) By now the alleged 1 year warranty had expired. Hayneedle was not understanding of the inferior quality product, and could only offer that I bought an entire new slat pack for $120. Atlantic Furniture, the manufacturer, was even less helpful, trying to sell me another slat pack for $80. When I said that I don't have faith in the quality of this product and that i cannot be replacing parts every 6 months, the customer service manager said something idiotic like "I am not standing in your bedroom, so I can't see if you've assembled it properly, or how you use the bed." The bed is lying disassembled and I guess this is just a waste of money!

I had this $900 bed a mere 5 months and one of the side slats cracked in half. Obviously extremely inferior materials and/or craftsmanshop. Of course, anyone can have a bad day. That's why we have warrantees. BUT, Hayneedle basically washed their hands of the situation - "We only warrantee for 30 days". Well, there ought to be a contingency for obvious flaws in the product. I'm trying to call the manufacturer to see what they are willing to do, but I will NEVER buy from Hayneedle again.

Q1: How many slats does this bed have?
A: This bed has 14 solid hardwood slats.
Q2: What is the weight capacity?
A: Our supplier has provided the following information : We don't have a specific max out weight but the beds are tested up to 300 lbs of static pressure and pass with flying colors. You also have the option of purchasing a second slat kit to roll over the first so that the slats inerlock which would create a solid base for the mattress.
Q3: Where is this manufactured?
A: Atlantic Furniture is manufactured in Indonesia (and Vietnam).
