Hook On Rails vs. Bolt On Rails

When shopping for a new bed, consumers often overlook the importance of bed rails. While components like headboards and footboards account for a bed's style, it is the bed rails that provide stability. After the mattress, bed rails are the part most responsible for giving beds their comfort.

Bed rails are typically made of either wood or metal and come in two types: hook-on and bolt-on styles. This style is determined by the way the bed rail connects to the headboard and footboard. While both hook-on and bolt-on bed rails perform the same function, each has its own distinct benefits.

Hook-On Bed Rails
Both wood and metal hook-on bed rails feature a set of hook-like structures on each end of the rail that slide into notches on the headboard and footboard to assemble the bed frame. Though they can be used with metal headboards, hook-on bed rails are most common on wooden beds.

Bolt-On Bed Rails
Like hook-on styles, bolt-on bed rails are available in either wood or metal but are typically used with beds made of brass, steel, or other metal. Bolt-on bed rails employ brackets on each end through which bolts are threaded to give the bed support and stability.

No matter the style of bed rail you choose, you should also consider purchasing center supports if you experience mattress sagging. With center supports, all the weight on the bed is resting on the bed rails and supports, and not on your headboard and footboard.
